Opal Garner, widow of Tom Garner passes

Opal Garner, widow of CSFA past President Tom Garner passed away January 5 following a brief illness. She was 92. Opal was married to Tom Garner who served as CSFA President in 1971 and over the years also served CSFA as conference parliamentarian and chair of the By-laws Committee among other duties in support of CSFA. Tom passed away in 1990.

In 1993, the CSFA Board of Directors established, in his memory, the Tom Garner Member of the year award, “to pay tribute to a CSFA member who most exemplifies the spirit and dedication of the man for whom it is named.”

Opal continued to attend CSFA Conferences until just a few years ago, when failing health prevented travel, to help present the award named after her late husband. The 86th annual CSFA Conference held in Reno, Nevada in 2008 was named in Opal’s honor.
