These high schoolers were there to compete in four timed skills competitions as part of CSFA’s first Fire Explorer Muster. The teams competed in Bunker and Hose Roll Relay, Hose Drag Relay, Make and Break, and Bucket Brigade, while parents and other supporters cheered them on.
Following team physical warmups by Robin Leafblad from Santa Ana College, CSFA President Eddie Sell, himself a former Fire Explorer, welcomed the students and their advisors to the beginning of the six-hour event.
Muster organizer and CSFA Director-at-Large, Colton FD Captain David Santos, provided color commentary on the team competitions as the day wore on. At the end of the day the Explorers assembled for trophy presentation where Captain Santos congratulated all teams, noting the strong sense of teamwork he witnessed among all the Fire Explorers he said, “you don’t lose you learn.”
The first-place trophy – and bragging rights — went to Moreno Valley Fire Explorer Post 58 who operate under advisors Lawrence Johnson and Olivia Martinez. Second and third place trophies went to Riverside City FD’s post 101A and 101B, respectively.
CSFA hosted this Fire Explorer Muster in cooperation with the Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department, the Kevin Woyjeck Explorers for Life Association, Phenix Technology, Southern California Edison, Western States Fire Inc., and Firehouse Magazine.
The fire muster was one of the largest CSFA-sponsored events that has been held in recent memory, and plans are already underway for the second annual Fire Explorer Muster. There is also talk of hosting a Fire Explorer muster event in northern California too.
