This is a tough way to begin 2026. Fire Chief Sam DiGiovanna, a beloved leader, mentor, and friend, passed away on December 31, 2025, at 9:03PM, leaving behind his wife Janet, and a legacy of service and dedication to his profession and community.

Chief DiGiovanna served as a Director on the California State Firefighters Association Board, and our primary author of the California Fire Service Magazine and the CSFA Weekly Connection. Chief Digiovanna was also Fire Chief of the Verdugo Fire Academy in Glendale, CA, and a Market Ambassador and Author for Lexipol. Chief DiGiovanna also served as a past Fire Chief of the Monrovia, CA Fire Department, and was commonly on local news stations as a highly recognized expert discussing fire incidents and fire safety. Chief DiGiovanna was also a firefighter behavioral health and wellness champion with several organizations.

Throughout his honorable and distinguished career in the fire service, Chief Digiovanna was known for his unwavering commitment to public safety, his compassion for others, and his ability to inspire those around him to do great things in their careers and lives. Chief DiGiovanna began his journey in fire service over 40 years ago, rising through the ranks due to his expertise, professionalism, and deep sense of responsibility. He touched countless lives through his leadership, training, and advocacy for the fire service and public safety. His wisdom and kindness made a lasting impact on everyone who had the privilege to work with him.

Beyond his career, Chief DiGiovanna was a devoted man of Christ, a member of Firefighters for Christ, and cherished member of his very large public safety community.

He will be remembered for the great generosity of his time, impeccable integrity, and the positive example and work ethic he set every day. His legacy will continue through the many lives he influenced and the improvements he brought to the fire service and community safety. Every graduate of the Verdugo Fire Academy and reader of his articles will carry their lessons learned and will carry Chief DiGiovanna’s spirit in them, as we at CSFA will.

Chief Sam DiGiovanna is remembered by family, friends, and colleagues who mourn his loss and honor his legacy. He will be deeply missed but never forgotten. Many of the Chief’s treasure trove of articles will continue to run at CSFA in his memory, and we plan on dedicating future events, including the explorer musters and youth pathway programs in his honor.

Seasons of Becoming was one of Chief DiGiovanna’s last articles. While the article focuses on showing love to your parents while they are still here, we also need to think about our relationships with our families, friends, and co-workers as well, as we never know when we will lose a friend like Chief DiGiovanna.
