Have you ever wondered whether you belong, or whether you’ve just learned how to fit in?
Research professor and author Brené Brown has a line that lands harder the longer you sit with it: the opposite of belonging is fitting in. It sounds simple, almost semantic, until you apply it to a profession built on cohesion, hierarchy, and shared sacrifice. In the fire service, belonging is assumed. Fitting in is expected. The trouble is the two are often mistaken for the same thing.
Belonging suggests acceptance without calculation. Fitting in requires adjustment. One allows a person to remain intact inside a group. The other asks for ongoing calibration – what to say, when to say it, how far to push, when to pull back. Psychologists have long drawn this distinction, noting that belonging is associated with psychological safety, while fitting in is associated with self-monitoring and performance. In most workplaces, this difference matters. In the fire service, where culture is tight and visibility is constant, it can shape an entire career.
Firefighters learn early how the system works. Probationary periods are designed to teach skills and standards, but they also teach something less formal: what is rewarded, what is tolerated, and what is better left alone. This learning is rarely explicit. It happens through observation, tone, side comments, and patterns that repeat themselves shift after shift. Adaptation is framed as professionalism. Restraint is framed as maturity. Most firefighters absorb these lessons quickly, because that is how teams function.
When Adaptation Becomes Identity
The issue is not adaptation. The issue is permanence.
What begins as situational awareness can harden into a permanent posture. Over time, fitting in stops being a temporary strategy and becomes the way a firefighter moves through the job. Opinions are softened before they are shared. Questions are filtered. Energy is spent reading the room rather than shaping it. On the surface, nothing looks wrong. The firefighter shows up, performs, and carries their weight. Internally, something has shifted…..
